The Can-SOLVE CKD Network’s Kidney Check project is one of 10 innovative health care solutions across North America selected to receive $1 million in grant funding through the TD Ready Challenge.
This funding will support the expansion of Kidney Check, an innovative, first-of-its-kind program that will transform early detection of kidney disease in rural and remote Indigenous communities in five provinces. Health care teams will travel to remote communities to conduct point-of-care screening for chronic kidney disease and its risk factors, including diabetes and high blood pressure. Taking advantage of mobile screening technology, including a custom-built iPad app, test results will be shared with participants in real time and each person will receive a treatment plan tailored to their individual risk.
The program is focused on decreasing the burden of chronic kidney disease in Indigenous communities through prevention. With earlier diagnosis, correct treatment and continued follow-up, the number of Indigenous people with chronic kidney disease will decline and fewer individuals will progress to kidney failure.
Kidney Check is based at the University of Manitoba under the leadership of Dr. Paul Komenda. The program builds on the successful FINISHED project which previously demonstrated the benefits of kidney screening in Manitoba.
Now in its second year, the TD Ready Challenge commits $10 million to help advance medical innovations across North America. The goal of this initiative is to identify and support scalable solutions that will help shape the future of health care.
